Top 5 smells we love at winter

By Lauren Carbran

Forget subtle smells – they’re SO last season! Yep, winter is all about the feel-good stuff, like that dreamy hot chocolate (with extra marshmallows and gooey bits at the bottom, please). Here are our favourite smells in winter – and the perfumes you’ll need to curb the cravings…

angel-sChocolate

Now, who doesn’t like the smell of chocolate – especially when it’s mixed with vanilla, caramel and fruit in Thierry Mugler Angel? And as gourmand fragrances are generally pretty delicious, we recommend you wear this wherever that special someone is (hint, hint: under the mistletoe). It may have launched 24 years ago (what?!), but it’s still big news this winter. So have it close when those choccie cravings hit. It would be rude not to…

vrCinnamon

We love cinnamon. It may be that it gives a wintry, warm undertone, or that it makes us think instantly of our fave fragrance, Viktor & Rolf Spicebomb, which combines cinnamon with a fresh top note of grapefruit and a kick of tobacco at its base. So it’s an obvious essential to your Christmas dinner parties. We’re going wild for it.

dgGinger

Nothing gives you a boost of energy quite like ginger. And we’re sure we’re not the only ones who love a ginger tea while watching our fave box set in winter. So, everyone, say hello to your new statement scent: Dolce & Gabbana The One For Men, with its notes of ginger, coriander, orange blossom and a woody base (which is always a good thing). It will quickly become your signature scent, guys – we promise. Debut it at the office Christmas party this year, and the rest will be history…

esteelauderWood

Why is the smell of woody fragrances SO good? Well, probably because the wood comes from such exotic places as India (sandalwood) and South America (gaiac wood). And here’s an early Christmas treat for you: not only is the new woody scent on the block fronted by Kendall Jenner, but it’s also a winter must-have. Say hello to Estée Lauder Modern Muse Nuit, a deep, sensual combo of jasmine, amber and musk to keep you smelling irresistible – with a bit of mystery, too). You may think it’s only perfect in winter, but no – it should be on your perfume shelf all year round.

yslCranberries

Mmm… one whiff of cranberries and we’re transported to the Christmas table, and the perfect accompaniment to our roast turkey. Thankfully, perfume with notes of turkey and cranberry doesn’t exist (yet), but Yves Saint Laurent Parisienne will ease those cranberry cravings. Why? It’s packed with just enough cranberry, blackberry and woody notes to smell like the fanciest Christmas Day. There’s a time and a place for some perfumes, but Parisienne’s moment is now – and forever and ever.
